Surprising Reasons to Get Moving – Beyond Weight Loss & Sweat!

Think you know all the reasons to get up and get moving?

You might be surprised by the benefits that go beyond shedding pounds and breaking a sweat!

In our increasingly sedentary world, most tasks require very little movement, and we often forget the impact physical activity has on our health and quality of life. Many of us spend hours sitting—at desks, in cars, or on the couch. While rest is important, so is movement. Our bodies were designed to move, and health is one of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves.

A Wake-Up Call: Why Movement Matters

I had an eye-opening conversation with a friend the other day. She’s in her early thirties and works with older adults. Through her work and within her own family, she has seen a major difference between those who regularly engage in movement—like walking, playing pickleball, or taking an exercise class—and those who don’t.

That observation has given her the motivation to make health a priority and commit to positive changes over time. Her vision of being able to move independently, play with future grandchildren, and avoid chronic illness fuels her “Why.”

But what if you’re not in your 30s?

Before you say, "I’m too old," consider this: A 90-something-year-old woman from Kelowna, Canada, started working out at age 60. Now, 30 years later, she enjoys a level of agility that rivals people 40 years younger.

Exception to the Rule? Let’s Find Out.

What if we challenged ourselves to make small changes—1% at a time—no matter what decade we’re in?

Our reasons for not exercising are often just excuses in disguise. I know because I’ve used them too! But while skipping workouts might feel like short-term relief, the long-term consequences impact our well-being.

We can make excuses or we can make progress—but we can’t do both.

Surprising Benefits of Movement

I’m not an exercise fanatic, but I move because I know I need to. I love taking long walks by the beach—something I’ve done for years. Now, my adult children sometimes join me, making it even more enjoyable. Through movement, I’ve personally experienced many of the unexpected benefits below.

1. Movement Can Give You a 2nd Wind

Feeling sluggish by mid-afternoon? Movement can be the perfect pick-me-up! Physical activity stimulates endorphins and enhances oxygen flow to the brain, helping you feel more alert and focused.

2. Movement Can Enhance Creativity

Studies show that physical activity improves divergent thinking, a key component of creative problem-solving. Next time you’re working on a project, try taking a movement break!

3. Movement Can Improve Physical Health

No surprise here, but it’s worth repeating! Regular movement:

  • Helps maintain a healthy weight
  • Reduces the risk of chronic disease
  • Strengthens muscles and bones
  • Improves cardiovascular health & digestion
  • Supports gut health
  • Even nourishes skin for a healthy glow

4. Movement Can Be a Mood Elevator

Physical activity has been shown to:

  • Reduce symptoms of anxiety & depression
  • Boost self-esteem
  • Lower stress
  • Improve overall mental well-being

Even just a few minutes of movement can significantly lift your mood!

5. Movement Can Improve Sleep Quality

Struggling with sleep? Regular movement has been linked to:

  • Better sleep quality
  • Reduced insomnia symptoms
  • More restful, deep sleep

6. Movement Can Strengthen Social Connections

Joining a fitness class, walking group, or sports team can:

  • Help you meet new people
  • Strengthen bonds with family & friends
  • Foster a sense of community & support

Even casual activities, like walking with a friend or playing a game of catch, can build lasting memories.

7. Movement Can Increase Productivity

Taking time away from your desk to move can actually make you more productive!

  • Boosts focus & cognitive function
  • Improves efficiency
  • Reduces brain fog

A quick workout or movement break can help you return to your tasks re-energized and clear-minded.

8. Movement Boosts Brain Health & Improves Memory

Studies show that exercise can boost memory and thinking skills—helping you stay sharp at any age!

Are You Ready to Move?

If you already incorporate movement into your life, keep up the great work! If not, start small.

  • Check with your doctor if needed
  • Make movement a regular part of your day

Whether it’s:

  • Stretching for a few minutes
  • A walk around the block
  • Dancing to your favorite song

Every bit of movement counts!

Embrace the joy of moving, and experience the countless benefits it brings to your body, mind, and spirit.
